International Helmet Awareness Day 2017 = 10% Off Helmets This Weekend!

One Stop Horse Shop is pleased to announce that we will be participating again this year, in International Helmet Awareness Day, held this year for a full weekend (16 - 17 September). Hooray!

And to celebrate - we will be offering 10% off all helmet sales this weekend, both in store (during our standard weekend trading hours), and online between 12:01 am Saturday 16th, and 11:59pm Sunday 17th.

We have a limited selection of helmets in stock, however the discount will still apply if we need to order in the style and size you need.

One Stop Horse Shop feel very strongly that all riders should consider wearing a compliant, safety riding helmet at all times whilst riding (no matter what discipline). We also suggest that it can be a good idea to wear a helmet whilst handing your horse on the ground, particularly if lunging or performing ground work (and particularly at the moment with the 'Spring Sillies' kicking in with many horses!).

It's also worth noting that helmet standards have changed in recent years, and to legally participate and compete in EFA events and competitions, your helmet needs one of the following certifications (as per the EFA website):

  • Current Australian standard AS/NZS 3838 (2006 onwards) provided they are SAI Global marked.
  • New Australian standard ARB HS 2012 provided they are SAI Global marked.
  • Current American standard ASTM F1163 (2004a or 04a onwards) provided they are SEI marked.
  • Current American standard SNELL E2001.
  • Current British standard PAS 015 (1998 or 2011) provided they are BSI Kitemarked.
  • Interim European Standard VG1 (01.040: 2014-12) with or without BSI Kitemark.

One Stop Horse Shop stock the 'Horze' range of riding helmets, which are all VG1 certified, and legal for competition. They also offer plenty of style and fit options to allow you to find the best helmet for you.

The question quite often arises over second hand helmets. Whilst we are currently delving in to the second hand gear market, primarily in relation to saddles and other quality gear, we do absolutely refuse to sell second hand helmets. This is due to the obvious safety hazards, as there is no way of knowing how compromised a second hand helmet might be. Whilst helmets might look structurally sound on the outside, any drop or impact (no matter how minor they seem) can substantially reduce a helmets effectiveness and the structural integrity on the inside. A second hand helmet therefore may not guarantee your safety in the event of a fall (and you won't know until you fall!).

The general recommendation is that helmets should be replaced after any fall or impact, and after 4 - 5 years of use. It's also recommended that you store your helmet safely and appropriately, and avoid dropping it on the ground (or dropping things on top of it!).

So if you are due for a new helmet - this weekend is the perfect time to make the investment and upgrade your head gear!
